Chapter Events

We are each a composite of our experiences: the events that occur and the opportunities that we take. Every move we make has an impact on someone, somewhere. And others’ lives—their ideas, decisions and activities—affect us, too. Yes, we are shaped by a series of experiences, but it’s how we interpret them, and act upon them, that molds the direction and meaning of our lives. Golden Key is constantly creating new opportunities for members to make a difference in their communities locally, regionally and internationally through leadership and service events around the world.

Unfortunately, your overloaded (some say lazy) President has yet to upload the pics. At our meeting, we need to locate a place to display the art work. In total I believe we have 10, 10X10 pieces to display. Marlene has suggested trying to get them hanged in Stevenson Cafe. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: ANNUAL CHAPTER LITERACY DRIVE

Where: Soquel High School When: Friday May 24th at 1:00-1:30pm

Every year, our chapter hosts a Literacy Drive. The idea is to reach out to the community by collaborating with local schools to host a creative writing contest. Usually we work with elementary and junior high students and have them submit poems, short stories, or some other form of creative literacy based work. Each student that participates receives a certificate of participation and the top three submissions, chosen by our members, receive gift certificates to Bookshop Santa Cruz. This year, however, we are offering this unique opportunity to the Special Education population. As such, instead of a writing component, we will be hosting an art project in those classrooms that decide to participate. So in the upcoming weeks, probably on a Friday or two, a small group of Golden Key members will be going to Special Education classrooms and hosting a 20-30 minute art project, having the students paint what “spring means to them.” If you would like to be a part of this absolutely amazing volunteer work, contact us and we will include you in the email-loop. Also, this year, instead of their being a winner, we are offering each classroom that participates a gift certificate to their retail store of choice, along with certificates of participation, and other little Golden Key merchandise (like pens, pencils, stickers, etc). If you would like more information on how to get involved, contact chapter President Jess Avila´╗┐ (jaavila@ucsc.edu) or Literacy Director Lina Saeed´╗┐ (lsaeed@ucsc.edu).

Golden Key wishes to make this event accessible to people with disabilities. If you need accommodation, please call SOAR at 459-2934.

Make a Difference Day

UC Santa Cruz, PB&J Drive

Organized by:

Golden Key International Honour Society

Homlessness is a major problem in our area and our chapter is aiming to alleviate the hunger, if not just for a day, for some of those that are less fortunate than us. We will be collaborating with Homeless Services Center in Santa Cruz, CA to hold a peanut butter and jelly drive on our campus (UC Santa Cruz). Our chapter will be purchasing the goods to make 150 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches; bread, peanut butter, jelly. On October 27, 2012 we will be setting up a PB&J station in Quarry Plaza, which is a central area on our campus. The event will be held from 10:00am - 2:00pm, possibly longer. By utilizing this area, we plan to engage not only Golden Key members but also the student body of UC Santa Cruz at large. Volunteers helping at the station will be both making sandwiches and recruiting students as they pass by. We plan to maximize our platform by also providing information about homelessness in our community and what students can do to help.At the end of the event, a few designated volunteers will be taking the sandwiches to the Homeless Services Center to be distributed. Golden Key wishes to make this event accessible to people with disabilities.
